I too am in the mid 40's bracket and thankfully gained my PPL last November after 4 long years. I still consider myself a student however. As my instructor says "A PPL is only a licence to learn to fly". And aint that the truth. Finance was certainly an issue, but all I can recommend is to keep on pushing. I started with the intention to be happy with GFPT in 152's, then I hoped to get rated on 172's, then first Nav, and so on. You might be surprised at how things can evolve if you've got the passion.

Once you've got that licence and can fly anywhere without a pair of eppaulettes next to you the feeling is fantastic. The pressures off and the fun begins. So get a loan, beg for donations or sell the kids, whatever it takes, it's worth it.
